Pedestrian Safety in Manor Lake

Have you had a close call with a car whizzing by while walking?  Or tried to cross an intersection with a driver that didn’t see you? If so, you may have been part of a phenomena that is happening across the United States – roads becoming less safe to pedestrians as cars become bigger, drivers become more distracted and the road design remain unchanged.

Pedestrian-related accidents are rising across the country and Maryland is no exception. Recent accidents have happened on Norbeck Road and Bauer Road, including a fatality in October.

Four Manor Lake residents attended the Pedestrian Safety Town Hall on January 10th with state and local officials, including Council Member Evan Glass and MCPS Superintendent Dr. Taylor, to learn more about how to improve pedestrian safety in Manor Lake. Topics included improving safety for children walking and biking to school and addressing dangerous intersections.

If you are interested in learning more or taking action, the links below will help.

Montgomery County Crash Map: Developed by the Montgomery Planning Countywide Policy and Planning Vision Zero team, the map shows accidents from 2015 through last week.  Click here.

Montgomery County Request a Sidewalk: Montgomery County requires new builds to have sidewalks. To retrofit older neighborhoods, they have a program to request sidewalks be added. Anyone can request a sidewalk (it’s anonymous), and you can also express support for existing requests.  Click here

Traffic Calming Measures: More information about potential traffic calming measures are here.
